It might be considered a daring move for an artist to switch genres. It would be difficult to win over new listeners on top of adjusting to a different sound and style. But for country music artist Jelly Roll, who formerly made waves in the hip-hop scene, this wasn't the case. Mixtapes he released in the middle of the 2000s were the initial catalyst for his rise to fame a rapper. It was no secret that artists like UGK, 8Ball & MJG, and Three 6 Mafia had an impact on Jelly Roll. In his over decade long career, he has worked with a number of prominent hip-hop artists, including as Struggle Jennings, Lil Wyte, Tech N9ne, and BPZ.
Surprising his followers, the artist from Antioch, Tennessee, made the switch to country-soul/Southern rock in 2021. In September of same year, he dropped "Ballads of the Broken," his debut country album. His debut performance at the world-famous Grand Ole Opry took place two months later, on November 9, 2021. To say that the album is a success is an understatement. His move from hip-hop to country was a smashing success. "Son of a Sinner" prompted Jelly Roll to completely embrace country music, which in turn led to the release of his groundbreaking album, "Whitsitt Chapel," in 2023.
With songs like "Save Me," "Need a Favor," and "Behind Bars," the album became a massive hit in the country music scene. The 13-track record is both a financial and critical success, earning a perfect rating from Entertainment Focus and Rock 'm' Load Mag. The album also enabled him to snatch two Grammy nominations in the recently concluded 2024 Grammy Awards. These nominations followed his success the previous year when he won all three nominations for the 2023 CMT Music Awards: "Male Video of the Year," "Male Breakthrough Video of the Year," and "CMT Digital-First Performance of the Year."
This year, Jelly Roll is hitting the road for his first major concert tour. Dubbed "Beautifully Broken Tour," the series of concerts will take the 39-year-old to hit 37 arenas across North America, including Moda Center on September 1. He will be joined by the country outlaw artist Warren Zeiders and rising country star Alexandra Kay.
Catch these three country artists set the Moda Center stage on fire. Kick off your September with a bang by immersing yourself in a concert that will make your summer memorable. Secure your tickets today by hitting the "Get Tickets" link.
