“We are incredibly excited to host Erykah Badu at the Moda Center,” PDX Jazz Executive Director and CEO Chris Doss said in the announcement.
Erykah Badu is a four-time Grammy Award-winning artist who is known as one of the world’s most cherished singers. Credited as neo-soul's godmother, her effortless blend of hip hop swagger and smooth jazz draws inspiration from fellow icons, like Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and Chaka Khan. Pitchfork said her 1997 debut album Baduizm is an “existential anchor of the neo-soul movement,” and we couldn’t agree more! The triple-platinum record debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200, and the lead track “On & On” snagged the Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance in 1998. At the turn of the new millennium, Erykah Badu released her highly anticipated second studio album, Mama's Gun, and it was an instant hit with singles like "Bag Lady." After the success of 2003’s Worldwide Underground EP, the star issued 2008's New Amerykah, Pt. 1: 4th World War. This record was a heavy and abstract opus, featuring major collaborations with the members of Sa-Ra and Georgia Anne Muldrow. The album was so popular that it climbed to the top of the Billboard 200 and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts. Over the years, Erykah Badu has sung to sold out crowds on several worldwide tours, dropped five critically acclaimed studio albums, and has even been featured on smash hits by Busta Rhymes, Macy Gray and Janelle Monáe.
